In recognition of National Suicide Prevention Week, our mission goes beyond helping clients achieve their dream of owning a home, to caring deeply about their well-being and that of their families.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. In fact, suicide rates have been increasing over the past decade, with an average of 132 Americans dying by suicide every day. These statistics are staggering, and they remind us that mental health is just as important as physical health.
Our Mission Beyond Mortgages: Supporting Mental Health
At VLG, we want to create a supportive and inclusive environment for our clients, where they feel safe and heard. That’s why we encourage our clients to prioritize their mental health, and we provide resources to help them do so.
One of the most important things we can do to prevent suicide is to talk openly about mental health. Many people feel ashamed or embarrassed to admit that they’re struggling, but we want to break down those barriers. It’s okay to not be okay, and seeking help is a sign of strength.
Resources for Suicide Prevention
If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, there are resources available. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available 24/7 at 1-800-273-8255. They offer free and confidential support to anyone in distress, as well as resources for loved ones. Veterans Crisis Line is also available for those that serve or have served. You don’t have to be enrolled in VA benefits or health care to call.
In addition, many employers offer Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) that provide confidential counseling services for mental health issues. If you’re unsure whether your employer offers an EAP, speak to your HR department.
At VLG, we’re committed to promoting mental health awareness and suicide prevention. We encourage everyone to take care of themselves and their loved ones and to never hesitate to seek help when needed. Together, we can make a difference and save lives.
